When people become so developed, they become apathetic of each other. When people are not so fortunate, they tend to help one another. The US is a well-developed society, and the people think that they can make do with their own money, and survive without the help of others. Well natural disasters strike and we are all back to reality.

Back in my undergrad sociology class, my textbook observed how there are many poor people in countries like India but they still keep a happy and positive attitude. I come from the Philippines where poverty is not stranger, and I see that poor people are actually moe hospitable even if they don't have the means, while rich people are aloof and have the attitude that they can fend for their own. But obviously that is not always the case.

hey LIW,
thanks for ur post...while i agree with ur comment as a whole...i also go with ur last line... "it aint always the case." In Mumbai, the rich and the poor alike, helped each other in the time of need...
I dunno much about New Orleans though... I really do feel bad and helpless about the homeless kids!

heu ashenden... y u getng mad.. all i meant was dat although both mumbai and new orleans screwed up, they did it on a much grander scale and no these werent the comments i was talking abt ... read the other posts....
btw, hurricane katrina as i mentioned earlier was predicted bt a big reason 4 the large number of deaths is that people refused to evacuate as they would then lose all their belongings... remember the people we r speaking of are largely the black community and at that point they were more fearful of losing all they had..
my earlier comment stands and all i wanty 2 say is not 2 mistake my nonchalance 4 indifference...
btw, mumbai we love u.. sahara samay we love u!!!
